Abstract
The so-called Nordic model for evaluating the economic impacts of tourism was developed in the 1980s. With the model, the impact of tourism income and the increased employment opportunities can be assessed at different spatial scales. The obtained results have frequently remained separated from the broader field of regional development and inadequate use has been made of them in the planning and promotion of tourism. Linking the Nordic model to evaluations of regional policy and planning could improve the exploitation of research results considerably. In this article, the Nordic model is examined as a central method for assessing the impact of tourism on a regional economy. An illustrative example is the evaluation of the economic effects of tourism in Pelkosenniemi, a municipality in eastern Lapland.
