Abstract
The study examines theoretically the development of tourism regions. Tourism regions are understood as social constructions that are characterized by the idea of the region rather than physical bounds. The development of tourism is first examined through a model of the life cycle of the tourism region. The model represents the traditional approach to the development of tourism. However, it can be seen to simplify the development process of the tourism region from the viewpoint of new regional geography. Its relationships with the fundamental geographical concepts - space and time - are especially problematic. The theory of institutionalization of regions represents a new approach to analyze the development of the tourism region as a sociocultural and historically contingent process. -English summary
