Abstract

In this chapter mathematical optimization modeling is reviewed and presented. The two broad classifications of mathematical modeling solution approaches, classical and meta-heuristic methods, are considered and various examples are given. The chapter also examines mathematical modeling approaches and gives practical steps on how to model mathematical problems. Furthermore, algebraic modeling languages (AMLs) and their solvers are considered and the advanced interactive multidimensional modeling system, which is a prominent AML, is introduced.
