Abstract
Two new ternary equiatomic compounds, CeRhIn and CeCuIn, have been synthesized which are found to crystallize in the hexagonal Fe2P type structure and CaIn2 type structure, respectively. The unit cell volume of CeRhIn deviates from that expected on the basis of lanthanide contraction. Its magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity (due to magnetic scattering), both show a broad maximum at about 150 K. The susceptibility of CeCuIn follows Curie-Weiss behaviour between 40 to 300 K and shows a slight deviation from it below 40 K. From these measurements it is concluded that cerium ions are in a mixed-valent state in CeRhIn but in a trivalent state in CeCuIn.
