N2 - It is worthy of note that, the losses of converter station are mainly composed of the losses of valves and converter transformers. To decrease the total losses of the high voltage direct current system, the losses of valves and converter transformer should be considered and critically investigated. In view of this, it is expedient to determine and calculate the power loss profile of the HVDC thyristor valves and converter transformer in order to have an overview of how to decrease the total losses of the high voltage direct current system. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to investigate various methods of determining the load losses of converter transformer. Subsequently, two of the methods are used to calculate the load losses of the HVDC converter transformer in order to validate the results. More so, this research work also explicitly discuss the procedures to provide total loss figures for thyristor valves during operating and standby conditions, based on the summation of individual loss components. This study was done in accordance with the formulas in IEC standard 61803, Determination of Power Losses in High-voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) Converter Stations alongside.
