Abstract

The volume fraction dependence of overdamped transverse modes turning propagative in the range of small wave numbers was demonstrated in closely index matched colloidal crystal (CC) of charged silica particles dispersed in ethylene glycol-water (EGW) mixture. The CCs were found to be free from multiple scattering due to close matching of refractive index of the particles with that of medium and were also free from the wall effects due to large size. A dispersion curve for the displacement modes of the blue phase of liquid crystals in the low wave number region was obtained without the hydrodynamic interaction. Experiments suggested a need for a hydrodynamic theory of CCs with polydispersity and anharmonicity.
