LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITY-LED DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA: Looking through an Asset-Based Lens

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

As a community-led methodology, Asset-based Community-led Development (ABCD) enables community members to drive their own development by using their own knowledge and resources first and thereafter leveraging activities, resources, and investments from outside the community, even as they retain control over the process. The ABCD approach addresses the internalised powerlessness and dependency of many South Africans caused by colonialism and apartheid. This chapter, through examples from South Africa and a case study from the Eastern Cape Province, demonstrates how community practitioners can use the ABCD tools to enable communities to recognise their own assets. Such awareness and mobilisation of local knowledge and resources can, as the case study demonstrates, prevent exploitation, restore people’s power, pride, and independence, and raise their consciousness about taking control of their future.
