Abstract

The Republic of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean to the east of the African continent. The island has a total area of 2,040 km2, making it the smallest country in the African group of countries. Mauritius is also the African country with the smallest population, with only approximately 1,300,000 people. Since independence in 1968, the country has developed from a poor, single economic sector-based economy to a modern diversified economy (U.S. Department of State 2012).
