Abstract
Businesses in the manufacturing sector are faced with sustainability challenges. This is mainly due to changes in resource availability, changes in environmental regulations and increase in social demands. As new methods of production are introduced by changes in technology or changes in resource availability, businesses in the manufacturing sector are affected and have to review operational strategies in order to stay in business. This does not only require financial fitness but meeting environmental and social requirements as well. There is no single, internationally recognized tool that organizations in the manufacturing sector can use to achieve sustainability. This paper explores the results from the implementation of Lean Manufacturing in a South African Clamps and Worm Drives manufacturing company and proposes the use of Lean Manufacturing as a tool for achieving business sustainability in the manufacturing sector. The authors employ the Company records to evaluate the impact of Lean Manufacturing on the organization’s financial, environmental and social status. The results show an improvement on the company turnover by 15.62% year on year from when a reduction in carbon emission by 74.14 tonnes of CO2 emission per year and job security for all employees.
