Abstract

The upstream wall-free end effect was investigated on both `smooth' and `rough' yawed circular cylinders in freestreams of low to moderate turbulence intensity. Surface oil flow investigations together with mean and fluctuating surface pressure measurements were obtained at a Reynolds number of 9.6×104. Two yaw angles 20° and 45° were investigated. Qualitative results show the presence of a vortex positioned at 0.8 and one diameters measured normal to the freestream, from the upstream end for the smooth 20° and 45° models respectively.
