Abstract

The lack of relevant literature that provides practical guidance and examples on the application of various variants of the mixed methods research design within the built environment discipline has continued to pose a challenge to students and academics alike. Hence, the chapters presented in this book offer practical and step-by-step guidance on how to apply mixed methods research design variants across the built environment discipline. Furthermore, the book elucidates the various philosophical and methodological underpinnings upon which the choice of a particular variant of the mixed methods research design is predicated. This introductory chapter provides a background and overview of mixed methods research design, its strength and weakness, the motivation for using mixed methods research design, and how data from qualitative and quantitative data sources can be integrated to interpret the research findings.
