Abstract

The decreasing inertia of electrical networks and the instability and vulnerability of microgrids were caused by the reduction in the number of synchronous generators and the extensive integration of inverter-based renewable energy sources. The interconnection of a larger number of MGs as a microgrid cluster (MGC) network is proposed as a possible option to tackle these challenges and improve the stability and power quality of the power system, as opposed to always connecting a single MG to the main grid. Furthermore, through resource sharing across MGs, connecting a number of MGs to form an MGC system enables more efficient energy consumption, particularly renewable energy. This chapter provides a thorough description of the MGC system, including its requirements, architectures and various problems.
