N2 - In this section, environmental modeling was defined in accordance to the various fields and branches of environmental modeling. The reason, aim and future relevance of environmental modeling were discussed. Sixty models relating to the main branches of environmental disciplines were discussed. The complexities of environmental models were examined with a case study—air pollution model. The relevance of the big data application in environmental modeling was highlighted with the aim of creating awareness of new techniques in environmental research.
