Abstract

What is meant by culture, and specifically what is cultural studies? What is the study of visual culture? And finally, what is an icon, and in our case, a cultural icon? The first section of this chapter situates the specific studies that follow within a general framing of cultural studies. The relationship between cultural studies and visual culture is then briefly teased out. Finally, our use of the term cultural icons is examined in the second section of this introduction as it relates to the book as a whole.
