Abstract

This introductory chapter sets the foundation for understanding photobiomodulation (PBM) and its application to brain health. It begins with a brief history of PBM (Sect. 1.1), tracing its origins and development through the years. It highlights key milestones in the field, as well as significant discoveries and innovations that have shaped the current understanding of PBM. Next, Sect. 1.2 delves into the fundamentals of PBM, explaining the underlying principles and mechanisms that govern the interaction of light with biological tissue. The section discusses the factors that influence its therapeutic effects. Section 1.3 focuses on PBM’s impact on the brain, exploring the ways in which light can modulate neural activity, improve cognitive function, and potentially ameliorate neurological disorders. Finally, Sect. 1.4 offers a scientometric analysis of the field up to December 2020, highlighting trends, prominent research areas, and emerging themes that have shaped the development of brain PBM research.
