Abstract

Diverse forms of governance institutions exist globally to deal with issues such as traditional customs, rules, and traditions in indigenous systems and ethnic groups where chiefs or traditional leaders have exercised leadership functions for generations. These structures were established to express the belief systems of particular societal groups. In a changing modernizing sociopolitical environment, the need has arisen to bring the essence of traditional leadership into the mainstream of democracy for improved governance.
