Abstract

Transmission line losses have a significant impact on power flow on a grid as well as generation cost; hence it affects operational scheduling in power systems. This study presents a DC optimization model with constrained power losses, of the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem. In the paper, a comparison of the TEP model with and without power losses is presented. The developed Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming (MIQP) model was solved using an Algebraic Modelling Language and validated on an IEEE 6-bus system. The numerical results obtained indicate that the transmission line loss is equivalent to a 2.4% incremental load.
