Abstract
The growing demand for medicine and healthcare systems on a global scale is increasingly burdening the pharmaceutical industry, which in turn highlights it as a major environmental pollution creator. Adoption of green chemistry as a preliminary idea by pharmaceutical companies in the 1990s has grown to be a major promising approach in improvement of environmental performance as well as industrial sustainability. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview and introduction to green chemistry and engineering principles, focused domains of research and strategies for the synthesis process of active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug candidates with reduced environmental risk, waste recycling, decreased solvent usage, and environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques. We also discuss certain notable examples of industrial scale production of pharmaceutical drugs utilizing green chemistry approaches. Additionally, we highlight the status, future opportunities, key promoters and challenges for improving and embracing the green chemistry perspective as a major future goal for sustainability of pharmaceutical industry.
