Abstract

A lithium (Li)-ion battery is one of the commercially available energy storage devices. Its applications range from small portable devices to pure electric vehicles (HEV) and even to massive machines and satellites. Even though it has some significant drawbacks, the high energy density and environmental sustainability are the factors that make the Li-ion battery popular and of much interest. It is an evolving technology that can bring many drastic changes to our world. This chapter emphasizes the fundamentals and various components of the Li-ion battery; their properties, materials used, the basic reaction mechanisms, and electrochemistry.
