Abstract

The present work focuses on the fabrication and mechanical testing of an aluminium matrix composite strengthened with the particle. Al-Mg-Si was used as the main matrix and mixed with nanoparticle TiN in varied proportion of 1- 4 wt.% using stir casting technique. The test carried out on the produced composites were density, hardness, tensile properties, phase evolution, microstructural and fractography. TiN particles were observed to refine the grains and were homogeneously distributed in the aluminium matrix composite. Clustering of nanoparticle TiN was seen in few places and some well-bonded particles with the aluminium matrix. The process of strengthened nanoparticle TiN improved both the microhardness and ultimate tensile strength of the produced aluminium matrix composite.
