Abstract

This paper experimentally investigates distortional buckling behaviour and strength of coldformed steel lipped channels, restrained at interval points by purlin-angle cleats, and subjected to pure bending tests. Angle cleats with cross-section nominal dimension of 100x75x3.0mm and height of 300mm were attached to the web of the channel, and connected to the web of the purlin section. The main aim of this experimental study is to investigate distortional buckling between two unbraced cleat-purlin connections of three different cross-sections, viz; 300x75x20x3.0mm, 300x65x20x3.0mm, and 300x50x20x3.0mm. All the experimental span lengths of the test specimens were determined using the Constrained and Unconstrained Finite Strip Method (CUFSM). Distortional buckling strength was evaluated using the Direct Strength Method (DSM), as specified in the North American design standard (AISI S100-12). The experimental results showed that by using this type of restraining system, the DSM for distortional buckling predictions were conservative.
