Abstract

Wind energy is a significant resource for agriculture, manufacturing industry and rural medical delivery process, which tend to improve human development. This energy when converted to electricity has no negative effect to the environment as compared to fossil fuel. Therefore, this paper focus on the experimental evaluation to develop a mathematical model for optimization and that can predict this locally developed 500 Watts horizontal wind turbine (HWT) for power generation. Definitive screen design method (DSDM) is used to developed the model, for the prediction and optimization of the horizontal wind turbine (HWT), the HWT was observed for 13 months measuring the speed of the wind, rotor shaft speed, voltage and current using hold peak HP-817A MINI wind meter, FT-7200 advanced tachometer, SST2016S204ISSgroupG ammeter and HYTAISTS890D digital multi-meter AC/DC respectively. The selected parameters for this prediction are speed of the wind (a), rotor shaft speed(b), current (c) and voltage (d). The maximum power generated during the operation of the HWT is 558 W, were obtained at speed of the wind of 4m/s, rotor shaft speed of 65 rpm, voltage of 18 v and current of 31 mA. The analysis of variance from the DSDM shows that the four parameters are significant as pattern to generating electrical power from the HWT and the R2 prediction value shows that the mathematical model can predict the HWT with about 98.8% which is practicable and suitable in the prediction of the power generated from HWT for sustainable development of power generation in Nigeria.
