Abstract

The South African construction industry plays a vital role in the country's economic development and infrastructure development. However, the construction activities contribute significantly to carbon emissions, posing significant environmental challenges. The paper investigates the environmental impact of carbon emissions in the South African construction industry by focusing on the sources, impact, and mitigation strategies. Survey research design was employed in this research where a close ended questionnaire was used for data collection among professionals in the built environment. A total of 106 questionnaires were administered while 82 were retrieved and considered fit for analysis. The result revealed that sources of carbon emissions within the construction industry includes energy consumption, transportation, waste management and material production. It also identifies the environmental impacts as air pollution, greenhouse gas accumulation, and climate change, which adversely affect both the natural environment and human health. Policy implementation, improved energy efficiency, use of renewable energy sources, adopting use of low carbon technology, the use of renewable energy sources, the implementation of sustainable transportation practices, and the use of environmentally friendly building materials were identified as strategies to reduce carbon emission. There is urgent need for the South African construction industry to address its carbon emissions through policies that will help minimize its environmental impact.
