Abstract

The chapter explores the nexus between electoral management bodies (EMBs), digital technologies, and the election process in the face of autocratic resurgence in Africa. EMB administration of free and fair elections is critical to the future democratisation in Africa. The standpoint of the literature affirms the inadequate independence of EMBs and its associated breaches of public trust. In advancing this discourse, this chapter critically examines the impact of election management bodies and digital technology on the election process in Africa. On the basis of the experience of Electoral Management systems in the Southern African region, the chapter reveals the emerging technological innovations in election management and their prospects and challenges on the continent.
