Abstract

An attempt was made to tap the renewable energy (biogas) potential of rice straw under varying Organic Loading Rate (LR) using a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) running at mesophilic temperature (37°C). A 140-litre capacity PFR was filled with 105 litres pre-cultivated sludge as inoculum, leaving a headspace of 25% for gas production. The loading of the rice straw into the reactor was commenced at a low LR of 0.5 goTS/l.d and was increased weekly by 0.5 goTS/l.d until a LR of 4.5 goTS/I.d was attained. The biogas produced was collected in a gas bag (LINDE), measured with a multi-chamber rotor gas meter (RITTER) and analyzed using an Infrared Gas Detector, PRONOVA. It was established that the biogas yields increased with increase in LR. The highest biogas yields of 0.20 I/goS was recorded at the LR of 0.5 goTS/I.d after which some relatively constant yields were observed. In all, rice straw has been established to have high energy value with prolonged hydraulic retention time at low LR and this could help in meeting the energy demand of the masses.
