title = "ECONOMIC EVALUATION TECHNIQUES FOR SUSTAINABLE BIO COAL PRODUCTION",
abstract = "Investment appraisals techniques are critical for measuring the profitability of a new project in the manufacturing sector. These appraisals techniques include the internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), payback period and accounting rate of return (ARR). In this case study where the economic potential for establishing a new bio coal production was evaluated using the hydrothermal carbonization technique: At total capital investment of USD 7.6 million was required. A payback period of 4.6 years was projected with an IRR of 21.7% and a break-even value of USD 2.9 million. The economic assessment was for a target bio coal production of 69 tons/day and a selling price of USD 200/ton. A positive NPV of USD 2.1 million was realized. The results from the investment appraisals in this case study indicated that it is worthwhile to invest in bio coal production.",
