Abstract

Microclimates play a crucial role in both human well-being and the preservation of ecosystems. They have a significant impact on the distribution, survival, and growth of species. However, traditional methods for understanding and managing microclimates have limitations that restrict comprehensive monitoring and analysis of these conditions. To overcome these limitations, digital twins offer a promising and innovative approach. Digital twins provide a dynamic solution for comprehensive monitoring and in-depth analysis of complex microclimates, enabling informed decision-making processes. However, the integration of digital twins within microclimate analysis research is relatively new, and the literature on this subject is still modest. This chapter applies science mapping analysis to identify the current trends, gaps, and future research in the integration of digital twins in microclimate analysis. To achieve this, a core sample of 318 papers and 14,397 references were obtained from Web of Science and Scopus. Influential authors, institutions with high research productivity, countries with significant contributions, and core journals in the field and their respective cooperative networks were identified. Additionally, 12 landmark papers forming the intellectual base were identified using document cocitation analysis while keyword cooccurrence and burst detection analysis revealed eight research hotspots, including environmental impact of human activities, influence of urban morphology on microclimate, energy efficiency, sustainability, urban development impact, controlled environment agriculture, human impact on biodiversity, and the role of building materials and urban design in energy performance. The chapter also highlights gaps in the literature and suggests future research directions.
