Development of an air quality dashboard using Sentinel-5P data

Abstract

Limited ground station data hinders air quality monitoring, but satellite data offers a reliable alternative for tracking pollutants. This study presents an operational system for monitoring air quality in South Africa using Sentinel-5P data for sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO), alongside particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). These datasets are processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE) and integrated into a web server via APIs. We display the spatial Air Quality Index (AQI) across South Africa during winter, highlight AQI pollutant contributions, and provide a PM2.5 time series for the Johannesburg region. We also introduce the ongoing development of a web-service dashboard, currently incorporating SO2, NO2, and CO data, with plans to include PM data. This dashboard, still in progress but on track, will support decision-makers, scientists, and authorities in monitoring air quality effectively.
