Abstract

Scramjet vehicle operates in a hostile environment and works within a narrow flight spectrum which inevitably manifests stringent design requirements which can only be addressed by system optimization. It generates thrust by its integral propulsive system comprising shock compression by ramps/corners/cowls, supersonic heat addition followed by supersonic expansion. In the current study, mixed compression inlet up to three external ramps and one internal shock reflection is optimized for total pressure recovery (TPR)-pitching moment coefficient (CM ), employing the weighted sum method using MATLAB fmincon, for vehicle performance and stability. The flow field is solved using oblique shock relations which reduces computation effort without much affecting the flow physical aspects. Effect of isolator beginning Mach no and freestream Mach no on the ramp angles are studied. The developed methodology can be utilized to better understand the trade-off among design parameters and its effect on the overall design. Further, this approach comes handy engineering tool for the preliminary design of the SCramjet inlet.
