Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on cubic U3Ni3Sb4 reveal well defined crystal field and spin - orbit excitations, consistent with a U4+ 5f2 configuration of the uranium ion. The magnetic ground state is a crystal field singlet. U3Cu3Sn4 shows a broad inelastic response extending out to 70 meV, consistent with moderately strong hybridisation between the 5f electrons and the 3d electrons of the copper.
