Abstract

Grossular, Ca3Al2(SiO4)3, was named in 1803 after Ribes grossularia, the botanical name of a gooseberry, because Siberian pale green crystals resemble the fruit of this plant (Galoisy 2013). Crystals are vitreous and translucent to transparent with a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7.0. Their specific gravity varies from 3.4 to 3.6, and their refractive indices are 1.73-1.76 (Stockton and Manson 1985).
