Abstract

The field of Power Line Communications (PLC) is still evolving. On the research level, there are still important opportunities to be exploited. On the application level, PLC is considered to be an emerging technology with important market potential. Before wider implementation and deployment can take place, the important issues of interference to other users of the radio frequency spectrum and the finalization of standards need to be addressed satisfactorily. This is especially true for broadband PLC. In conclusion, PLC is a reality with excellent market opportunities both in existing scenarios, e.g. home networking, and new ones, e.g. the Smart Grid. Controlled Vocabulary Terms: carrier transmission on power lines; smart grids.
