Abstract
This Global Voice chapter explores the concept of play and playfulness in higher education, with a focus on the South African context. Drawing on the personal journey of the author as a teacher educator and scholar of teacher education, it provides a unique perspective on the use of play in decolonising higher education and promoting innovative and immersive learning environments. The chapter examines the role of emotion in higher education, arguing that it can lead to profound transformation when embraced and nurtured. It also explores the connection between play and learning, highlighting the importance of joy and creativity in promoting innovative thinking. The chapter offers practical insights for teacher educators, providing guidance on how to incorporate play and playfulness into teaching practices. Overall, the chapter presents a compelling case for incorporating play and playfulness in higher education, developed through guided collaborative play, and as a means of promoting transformative learning experiences.
