Code switching in Mqapheli Mngadi's Editorial Cartoons

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Code switching is one of the techniques that sometimes characterize literary works, including cartoons. There has been a lot of research works on code switching in different disciplines, but little has been done to analyse this element from a literary point of view. Authors, including cartoonists, employ code switching for different artistic reasons, and this chapter aims to determine the purpose they serve in Mngadi's cartoons. The discussion is done through the three types of code switching, namely intra-sentential code switching, tag code switching and inter-sentential code switching. It is through these types that the artistic use and effect of code switching in Mngadi's cartoons is determined. The concept of code switching is defined in the introduction and in the discussion sections of the chapter. Comments on the three types of code switching are also made before their application to relevant cartoons.
