Abstract
Multidisciplinary research on composite materials has witnessed exceptional growth in recent years. Polymeric nanocomposites have demonstrated great potential for a wide range of applications in both science and technology. The objective of the research on polymeric nanocomposites is to explore the basic mechanism of formation, the physics and chemistry of the systems, as well as their potential applications. Carbon nanotubes play a major role in such materials due to their remarkable electrical, mechanical, optical and thermal properties. As a result, the accretion of carbon nanotubes to polymers is expected to reinforce the intrinsic properties of the matrix polymers as well as create additional functionalities. The present chapter discusses the potential applications of ‘carbon nanotube based polymer nanocomposites’ in the biomedical and catalysis fields, as well as in electronics and sensor applications.
