Business Processes: A critical tool for Industry 4.0 enablement

Abstract

Contemporary business comprises multiple functions with crucial interdependencies. The ability to manage and optimize multiple functions is a legacy challenge. Industry 4.0 as applied to these complex business structures, for execution, is best digitalized through a structured approach. Traditional IT has defined business processes to capture sequences of activity for systems. This paper highlights and business processes as an essential science in support of digitalization of business. The assumption of total business process automation is the commensurate point. Business processes become the focus and key enabler. This research paper develops the business process structures for Industry 4.0 together with discussion on case studies. These case studies are on active or completed projects of the research team.
