Bridging the Digital Divide: A Society 5.0 Super Application for Inclusive Socio-economic Development

In South Africa’s rural and peri-urban areas, the digital divide continues to be one of the most significant socio-economic issues, restricting access to vital services, economic opportunities, and education. The Society 5.0 Super Application, an integrated digital platform that aims to empower local communities through agricultural e-commerce, STEM education, SME business support, and virtual reality (VR) innovation, is examined in this case study. The platform was created in cooperation with regional stakeholders using microservices architecture and Agile Design Science Research Methodology (ADSRM) to guarantee inclusive and context-specific solutions. The pilot projects showed notable benefits in small-scale farmers’ access to markets, improved student learning materials and heightened local business economic engagement. The study also points out issues with sustained user engagement, infrastructure constraints, and digital literacy, underscoring the necessity of community-driven digital adoption initiatives and long-term investment. By providing insights into the scalability and durability of digital transformation in underserved locations, the findings add to worldwide best practices in applying Society 5.0 concepts within the particular South African context. This case study provides a starting point for more conversations on investment methods, policy recommendations, and the function of people-centered technology in closing the digital gap for long-term socio-economic growth.
