Abstract
Electricity generation has been a persistent challenge for developing and underdeveloped nations of the world. Small-, medium- and large-scale fossil fuel-powered electricity generators have been employed in several communities as a means of providing alternative electricity supply. Due to the high running cost and environmental threat associated with the use of fossil fuel-powered electricity generators, concerned bodies have presented strong motion for urgent replacement (partial or total) of fossil fuel energy sources with renewable and clean energy sources, among which biogas from anaerobic digestion of biomass has been enlisted and proven to be economically efficient, especially for rural residents and farm land. Yet this has not been fully adapted in some areas and applications. This paper thus presents a review of various attempts made towards the adaptation of biogas for electricity generation in Nigeria, including the current challenges the technology faces. Sustainability was found to be among the major ones.
