Abstract

Indian Reference MaterialsBND® represents an inevitable tool for analytical quality and plays an important part in maintaining quality measurements. The reliability of analytical procedures can only be verified with the use of CRMs/BNDs that control and evaluate the quality of analytical results. Rapid industrialization demands reference materials in various sectors like the environment, food & agriculture, petroleum products, physico-chemical materials, etc. To meet the demand for CRM in the market, various countries are producing them with the help of RMPs in their respective countries. In this endeavour, CSIR-NPL is producing BNDs on its own and also in the association of RMPs across the country as per ISO 17034. Usually, these CRMs are sold out worldwide at a high cost and the validity of reference standard is for a limited period and requires to procure again and againwhich are very tedious and also cause huge recurring loss of national resources. In this aspect, BNDs produced at CSIR-NPL acts as import substitution and makes it economically viable for many academic institutions and industries. Keeping these facts in view, this chapter describes the process for the production of different BNDs, sample handling and storage, homogeneity and stability, uncertainty, assignment of property value, certification, etc. In addition to this, detailed information about certain in-house produced BNDs and in association with RMPs are provided. Few future contemporary on-going BNDs activity such as for thermoelectric metrology, spin current, tensile strength and dynamic viscosity, Newtonian fluids (silicon oils) are also described in this chapter. At the end of this chapter, to support medium, small and large-scale industries future prospects of BNDs are also highlighted. Further, it has been elaborated on how CSIR-NPL is collaborating with accreditation and regulatory bodies to strengthen the quality infrastructure in India.
