Abstract

This book chapter provides a comprehensive exploration of the complexities surrounding the inclusion of sexual and gender diversity within South African higher education. Drawing upon a literature review of existing research, the chapter illuminates the lived experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) students and staff in universities, highlighting the pervasive challenges of homophobia, transphobia, heteronormativity, and compulsory heterosexuality that shape the academic landscape and hinder authentic inclusion and belonging. The chapter troubles the dominant discourses of inclusion, social inclusion, and social justice education, arguing for the need to move beyond narrow conceptions of accessibility and representation towards a more intersectional and transformative approach. Through a critical analysis of the accounts of early-career academics, researchers, and students, the chapter exposes the risks and challenges associated with advocating for LGBT inclusion within heteronormative and homophobic institutional cultures. The chapter examines the structural and symbolic manifestations of heteronormativity within university policies, practices, and spaces, revealing the multiple, intersecting forms of oppression and marginalisation faced by LGBT individuals. Drawing upon the insights of queer theory, the chapter proposes a range of strategies for widening inclusion and strengthening meaningful responses to sexual and gender diversity in higher education, encompassing policy reform, curriculum transformation, capacity building, support services, inclusive residence life, collaborative research, accountability, institutional culture change, and leadership and advocacy. Ultimately, the chapter argues that the journey towards authentic inclusion and social justice for LGBT individuals in South African higher education requires sustained commitment, critical reflexivity, and collective action to dismantle oppression, challenge heteronormativity, and foster belonging and agency for all.
