Abstract

Most research works have majorly focused on the adoption of BIM on new construction projects; little attention has been given to historical and existing buildings to be BIM compliant, especially for maintenance purposes and preservation. This study investigates the barriers to the implementation of Scan to BIM in the South African construction industry. A well-structured questionnaire was randomly administered to industry professionals with knowledge of BIM and Scan to BIM. It was observed that the cost of implementation, lack of investment, lack of training and lack of demand were the top barriers. The study provides stakeholders with an insight into the articulated challenges so as to properly formulate policies and solutions to overcome them.
