Abstract

Gait analysis is a valuable tool that can be used in human motion tracking in rehabilitation, biometrics, sports, surveillance, animation and other application areas. Vision-based gait analysis is common in clinical practice, however for the analysis, sophisticated devices and complex methods are prerequisite. These factors limit the applicability of gait analysis system. Thus there is a requirement of easy to operate and a low cost, yet reliable gait analysis system for general users. In this paper, a new approach has been proposed for an automated markerless gait system to describe, quantify and analyze human gait motion. A mixture of Gaussian based image segmentation is performed for feature extraction to identify the knee joint angle. Based on kinematic parameters, health care professionals can analyze and diagnosis gait pathology. The result conforms the usability of holistic based kinematic approach from the clinical prospective.
