Abstract

The South African (SA) government has proposed a strategy to vigorously decrease its Green House Gas emissions by cutting almost a third of its current annual emissions by the year 2030. The country plans to utilize more rail to transport its freight. Although reliable, locomotives are not immune from failures. Traction motor (TM) failure is one of the components prone to failing. The objective of this study is to identify the origins of such failures and provide actionable solutions on how challenges can be resolved from a maintenance perspective. The Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) is employed to help identify these causes of failure. The results indicate the importance of the 'back to basic' phenomenon. The research identifies the low hanging opportunities as the most significant. This indicates the importance of ensuring that all company resources (people, machines & facilities) are managed optimally to improve quality.
