Abstract
An improved method for the rapid extraction and purification of the nucleic acids from small amounts of Escherichia coli is described. The method is applicable to multiple samples of about 5 × 108 cells each, and can be completed in about 4-6 hr. Recovery is on the order of 60%, there is little detectable degradation or selective loss of RNA, and virtually all of the cellular-derived carbon in the final preparation is nucleic acid.
