Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms urban resource management in the Global South, fostering sustainable smart cities. AI’s diverse applications enhance urban living and environmental sustainability. In energy management, AI optimizes renewable energy sources and grid distributions. Waste management systems employ AI for collection optimization and recycling enhancement. AI-driven water conservation efforts optimize water usage in water-scarce regions. AI transforms transportation and mobility by reducing congestion and promoting sustainable transport. AI aids in creating energy-efficient urban spaces and fosters inclusive urban governance. AI analyses and reduces environmental impacts, particularly in cities like Lagos, Nigeria. Ethical and privacy considerations in AI implementation are crucial, balancing technological progress with citizens’ rights. AI holds immense potential to enhance sustainability in urban environments of the Global South, but responsible and context-aware integration is essential.
