Abstract

For a South African reader a slightly disconcerting feature of Manthia Diawaras book on African cinema is the total exclusion of South Africa (except for a few passing references) from the discussion. There are clear historical reasons for this, of course, not the least important of which are the facts that South Africa was not colonised and decolonised in precisely the way that the rest of Africa was.
