Abstract
Chitosan–silica hybrid aerogel was applied in aqueous solution for Cd 2+ removal. The resulting aerogel was subjected to pH, contact time, and metal recovery studies. Data obtained was subjected to kinetic and isotherm studies. The optimum conditions for Cd 2+ adsorption was established to be at a pH of 3 and contact time of 180 min. Pseudo second order kinetic model with R 2 value above 0.9 was best fit to the study whereas Langmuir model is the preferred isotherm for the data as the dimensionless constant separation factor calculated fell between 0 and 1. Parameters influencing the adsorption process were also investigated.
