Abstract
The chapter introduces an empirical study on the meaning of family by adolescents and youths in Zimbabwe’s child welfare institution. Gwenzi offers a justification of why the study of family meanings is important, particularly for young people growing up separated from the biological family. The chapter highlights the meaning of family in the study, which includes family definition and family membership. These family meanings derive from traditional and nontraditional definitions of family in society over time. The study which utilised a convergent parallel mixed-method research design was described, the description of which included the study epistemology and ontology, the data collection procedures, sampling details, data analysis procedures and ethical considerations. The chapter concludes with a reflexive account of the study, which highlights the researcher’s positionality in the study.
