Abstract

This study presents a practical application of the netzero building framework for small-scale commercial buildings. An overview of the existing literature around the development of net-zero projects in the African continent is first presented. The net-zero framework is presented and expanded on. The study's objective is to illustrate the impact of applying energy efficiency before designing a renewable energy source to achieve net-zero energy for a building. A case study is presented to illustrate the impact of applying the net-zero framework and considering energy efficiency prior to the renewable energy system design. The case study results show a 24% reduction in the overall building load and a 19% reduction in the designed renewable energy system costs.
