Abstract

Power system (PS) networks with adequate operating reserves plays an important role in safeguarding the economies around the world. When PS has insufficient operating reserves, they could be prone to load-shedding or total black-outs. Operating reserves are mainly classified into three categories, which are regulation reserve, spinning, and non-spinning reserve. This paper reviews the provision of ancillary services and research opportunities for dispatching voltage and frequency ancillary services of emergency reserves in South African power networks. The voltage/frequency control of distribution and transmission grids are examined. This includes the current state of South African power networks in particular the existing load-shedding issue. Lastly, the opportunity for further study is identified in the provision of ancillary services to resolve the existing problems.
